Emerging Life:
Laurentian Ice Station

MSOA Projects

This ice station sculpture was a collaboration of the first-year students at MSOA, Laurentian University, under the guidance of Professor Chris Baziw. This ice station was placed on Lake Ramsey, a cornerstone of the city and natural landscape, for the winter 2022 MSOA Installation showcase. The concept for this design was that during a brief moment when a fish leaps out of the water, and for a split second, its back arches, exposing its back and tail before diving head first back into the water. This design is meant to be a freeze frame of that moment, thus the name "Emerging Life." As the structure was a centerpiece for the showcase, the deadline for its completion was very strict due to the state of the ice in January, almost cancelling the showcase altogether. As the structure was made of 100% wood and held together with dowels, it was an incredible project to work on that introduced my cohort to the complexities of construction and timelines.
